i think the reason people like the series (im in that group...sorta) is that i can count the number of game series where one gets to play as a dragon on my fingers

But,myself,I mostly prefer Sparx that is not as popular as Spyro.

i just think spyros a cool guy, its a change from having to play as a person, ive liked spyro since i was 7 0r 8 and im 16 and still like him ^_^

and hes got alot of games, hes just cool in away hes like mario, marios cool too.

scars one strange lion...snapes just funny and everyone likes to take mick out of him, ma friends do anyways XD

Hmm, I'm not sure really. I just remember when I was a lot younger my parents bought me the very first Spyro game, and I liked it, and just kept buying and playing the games after that. I think he's an interesting, unique character, and I especially like him even more after the big change they made in the Spyro games. =]
That's basically my reason for liking Spyro, my parents fault lol. xDD

He's so great to me because I grew up with him. I think he's popular because in the early games he had such a different game style. It was like another world that could actually exist with believable powers and characters.

If you want three words to summarize it, here they are: Playable dragon character. Like other people have said, it's really rare where the main playable character in a game is a dragon; riding, summoning, or fighting against them is rather common but actually playing as one is not.

And, the early games (the ones by Insomniac) had a lot of appeal; they were lighthearted, had funny, interesting characters, awesome music, not to mention the gameplay; I really liked the way there were so many nooks and crannies in the levels to explore. The difficulty is just right too: it's not incredibly difficult to beat the main part, but it took quite a bit of work to get 100%.

As for the newer games (particularly the new trilogy), I don't know whether people actually like them or are just hanging around for the nostalgia– I personally just don't care for them. The plot has too much Serious Business, and the gameplay involves constant, repetitive fighting against enemies; none of that level exploration and mini-levels that made the early games so fun. The only thing I liked about A New Beginning was chibi Cynder at the end (not evil Cynder).
